Little Free Libraries

Shaped as iconic reds barns to promote agriculture and literary access

Installing Across Southern Maryland and Beyond

Be on the lookout for the eye catching SMM red barns in your neighborhood! The miniature barn libraries are easy to spot with their standout red and white paintwork and Southern Maryland Meats logo prominently placed above the barn doors.

The libraries are designed to promote the Southern Maryland Meats program livestock producers in a fun and engaging way and encourage awareness of the importance of agriculture in our everyday lives. Each library will provide free reading materials for the community to borrow, including a copy of The Girl Who Thought in Pictures: The Story of Dr. Temple Grandin who is most known for her inventions of groundbreaking improvements for farms around the globe.

  • Be amenable to stewarding organization and generally open to the public
  • Have a safe location that is visible to the public
  • Must engage the community to utilize the library to its fullest
  • Preferred: Located in one of the 5 Southern Maryland counties
(Anne Arundel, Calvert, Charles, Prince George’s and St. Mary’s)

  • Provide a written letter of intent to host a LFL
  • Attend a grand opening ceremony with Host, steward, and SMADC
  • Maintain the upkeep of the LFL including but not limited to surrounding maintenance on property. The repairs should be taken care of in a timely manner.
  • Cover all costs of maintaining and/or repairing the LFL’s surrounding property
  • In the event that the LFL needs to be relocated, the Host agrees to arrange for new location on premise.

  • Hosting a library promotes literacy and local agriculture
  • A way to give back to your community and cultivates a spirit of generosity
  • LFL locations will be posted on the public map which can boost awareness

“The Friends of the Baden Library is excited to put our Little Library to use. We are hopeful that it will serve our community for those who aren’t able to access the public library because of time constraints. Being located near the Community Center, it will be a great place for “grab and go” reading material. Thanks to you, Rachel, for walking us through the process; your enthusiasm is contagious!” – Gwen Ashley, Baden Community Center

“The Little Free Library has been a well-loved blessing to our neighborhood. We are so grateful!” – Sara Giles, Andover Estates Community
